Personal Statement + About Me

I am a storyteller from Chicago-ish, IL passionate about the issues that face the world today, particularly at the convergence of climate change and social justice. I want to tell stories about the ways in which climate pressures and environmental inequities impact marginalized communities and solutions needed for climate mitigation, adaptation, and planetary restoration. I enjoy exploring what a just energy transition and more climate-conscious world looks like for humans and non-humans alike.

A future that prioritizes climate equity hinges on reporting that is thoughtful, solutionary, accountable, and diversely sourced. It also depends on scientifically accessible storytelling. Research shows that while most people agree that climate change is a top-priority issue, many don't understand it or the policy and technology needed to solve it. As I embark on my career as a journalist, I hope to foster a reporting style focused on those solutions and those most impacted by the climate crisis.

In May 2022 I graduated from Vanderbilt University. Since graduating, I’ve worked at FootPrint Coalition, Robert Downey Jr.’s climate change initiative, writing on the beat of climate and its technology ecosystem. Through research, interviews, hands-on experiences, and the mentorship of my editor, I’ve learned so much about the climate tech sector, innovative startups, and scientific and political communication.

My internship helped define my personal purpose and professional career goals as a journalist through exposure to how needs in marginalized communities connect with the green economy and built environment, and the role journalism must assume in teaching connections like this, which are unfolding in real-time.

I am currently an M.A. Candidate and the David Maraniss Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication where I am refining my skills in ethical reporting practices, environmental storytelling, and multimedia journalism.

Through reporting, I hope to invigorate, teach, and challenge readers, because when a story can both teach and fascinate, it can accomplish the deep scientific appreciation, awareness, and action climate storytelling strives to achieve.

Aside from journalism, I also write fiction and poetry. When I'm not writing, I enjoy reading, antiquing, rollerskating, tending to my too many houseplants, playing chess, visiting art museums and galleries, and making art. View some of my work below!
